The flatter the paint the less the imperfections show. However if the imperfections are quite large, you may want to try a textured paint or a good faux finish.

Why should you not paint ladder?

The glossy paint makes it slippery!Another View: Paint (of any type) would tend to hide imperfections and cracks occurring in the wood, and might make an unsafe ladder appear to be safe.

Do you use flat or semi gloss paint for the ceilings?

You will have no problem painting satin over top of flat paint. Just remember to use the appropriate paint that will stick to the old coating. If the old coating is latex (water based) you can go over it with latex or alkyd (oil based) paint. If the old coating is oil based you can only go over it with oil based paint or a hi performance latex that is specialy made to go over oil. Most latex will not stick to oil based paint.

How do you feather edge auto paint where new meets old paint?

Get farther away and put down less paint on the old finish. You can put more thinner in it also, so that it doesn't hide as much. After it dries, you can buff the old to blend in the finish. It takes a lot of practice and talent to do this so that you don't see the difference. All paint fades and some colors are very hard to match.

What is distemper paint?

Distemper paint is formed by mixing whiting (fine chalk), hide derived glue, water and pigment. Soft distemper as it is called is applied warm onto internal wall or ceiling surfaces and produces a durable soft sheen finish which tightens as it cools. It is both a paint and if mixed stiffer a form of filler. Traditionally this was used as the finish for lime and earthen plaster. Many people have a low opinion of distemper paint as they see it as dusty and flakey. However the paint may well be over a hundred years old by this point so it is to be expected that it is showing signs of age. The process for preparing distemper is to soak crystals of hide glue in a measured quantity of water overnight. This is then warmed just before use in a water bath or heated glue pot (much as you would melt chocolate in a bowl sitting in water) The whiting is then gently and gradually stirred in to avoid lumps forming. Pigment can also be added at this point. Once prepared the mixture can be adjusted to produce a more liquid mix or a more chalky mix by adding a little more of the relevant material. Measures should be used so that once the correct quantities have been established they can be repeated consistently. lebretontraditional.co.uk

Wall that has been sponged a mauve color I'm painting over it with a dark beige color can i use a white primer or should i have my primer tinted?

As long as the original paint is intact, you do not even need a primer. The advantage about using a primer is that it might help to hide the old color easier, but you will have to buy the primer AND the paint that you like. Is the existing paint latex? Is the new paint latex? Is there any bare drywall? Unless there is something that we don't know, I would just buy enough paint to paint the wall 2 coats. If you want to prime it, you can have the primer tinted a little to get you closer to the color that you have chosen, but it will be more trouble and work than is necessary.
