What was the inspiration behind the light bulb?

The better and earlier lamp (what we now call the high efficiency light bulb or florescent bulb) was invented by Tesla, but would not work on the inferior power system that Edison had built. The need was for a bulb that would work on D.C. or A.C.

Edison is credited by most people for inventing the bulb even though the arc lamp and florescent were being used before him.

The real answer is that he didn't invent the lightbulb. He had only improved on what someone else did 59 years before him. And in order to avoid legal battle joined with the real inventor Warren De la Rue and then James Swan to market the lightbulb in Europe. To say he invented it is farfetched when the proper research is done. But to say who created the better product of that time would be more proper and Edison would fit that bill because he did work to make the better product.
He made it because he felt he should contact people in a different wayand because you would use coal for your fire so he thought it would be nice if you got loght from a different source.

He didnt Joseph Swan invented the light bulb. Thomas Edison only improved on this idea and that's why people give him all the credit because its his design used today.

Edison didn't invent the light bulb he simply improved it like many hundreds of the other inventors that did!
He didn't. Edison simply improved on previous designs made by other engineers and was able to market his design. In fact, he was successfully sued by the British engineer, Swann, for patent infringement, who then acquired part of Edison's company as compensation.

What Edison did invent was the electric generation, distribution, and power usage metering system infrastructure needed to make the light bulb and other electric appliances practical products to sell, as without electric power you cannot use any of them.
He didn't actually invent the light bulb, but created the present form, one that was practical for electric lighting. Other inventors had various problems with their bulbs, which Edison overcame by using a high-resistance filament (originally carbon, later tungsten) and by creating a vacuum within the bulb to minimize oxidation when the filament was heated.

People had accidents because they went into a ditch or off a bridge. Sports and activity couldn't be done because of no lights. Houses had to use candles, fireplaces, or gas lamps for light and furniture had to be placed so people didn't bump into it if they got up. That is why the light bulb is important.

The first electric light was made in 1800 by Humphry Davy, an English scientist. He experimented with electricity and invented an electric battery. When he connected wires to his battery and a piece of carbon, the carbon glowed, producing light. This is called an electric arc.

Much later, in 1860, the English physicist Sir Joseph Wilson Swan (1828-1914) was determined to devise a practical, long-lasting electric light. He found that a carbon paper filament worked well, but burned up quickly. In 1878, he demonstrated his new electric lamps in Newcastle, England.

In 1877, the American Charles Francis Brush manufactured some carbon arcs to light a public square in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. These arcs were used on a few streets, in a few large office buildings, and even some stores. Electric lights were only used by a few people.

The inventor Thomas Alva Edison (in the USA) experimented with thousands of different filaments to find just the right materials to glow well and be long-lasting. In 1879, Edison discovered that a carbon filament in an oxygen-free bulb glowed but did not burn up for 40 hours. Edison eventually produced a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours.

Lewis Howard Latimer (1848-1928) improved the bulb by inventing a carbon filament (patented in 1881); Latimer was a member of Edison's research team, which was called "Edison's Pioneers." In 1882, Latimer developed and patented a method of manufacturing his carbon filaments.

In 1903, Willis R. Whitney invented a treatment for the filament so that it wouldn't darken the inside of the bulb as it glowed. In 1910, William David Coolidge (1873-1975) invented a tungsten filament which lasted even longer than the older filaments. The incandescent bulb revolutionized the world.

In 1800 Humphry Davy found if you attach a wire and carbon to a battery it glowed. Later Thomas Edison would experiment with different types of carbon filament paper to find a way to make a light bulb last 1500 hours.

2. The reason Edison invented everything he invented was simply to try to make money.
3. One of his earliest inventions was an automatic electrical voting system designed to help simplify and speed up voting by Congress, but they did not want their voting process simplified and sped up. They wanted voting on every bill to drag out as long as possible! After this experience Edison swore he would never again attempt to invent anything unless he was absolutely certain that he had a willing market to sell the resulting product(s) to when the invention was ready, so he could actually make money off the effort.
