i did the index for the book ' Hancock's last stand' , written by Eddie joffe, the director of his last tv series. it was published in 1998 by 'the book guild ltd'. because tony had become an alcoholic he voluntarily went into a clinic in Australia to help him get over the addiction. once he left the clinic he lived with Eddie joffe , his wife and children in a house at 98 birriga road, bellevue, (near bondi beach), sydney. it was a tall building with 4 floors. tony lived in the bottom, garden flat. it is a pleasant part of sydney, not very posh though!
Eddie nursed him through each day's filming and often spent half the night talking to him. on the night before he died Eddie asked someone else to take tony home as he was going out for meal that evening with his wife, myrtle.
somehow on the way home tony obtained a bottle of vodka. during the evening he came upstairs and borrowed some coffee from the babysitter. next morning they banged on the floor to tell tony that breakfast was ready, as usual, but there was no answer. myrtle went downstairs and discovered his body.
apart from his drink problems, he was concerned over the quality of the tv scripts , his recent divorce and worried that he would not be able to renew his relationship with joan le measurier. he had also made comments about his UK agent in an Australian magazine called 'chance', that may have led to a court case when he returned to the UK too. his health was in a shocking state due to years of excessive alchohol abuse and there is doubt about how much longer he had to live anyway. i hope this clarifies how and where tony died. he did not die neglected in a hotel room. Eddie did all he could to help tony, but if someone is determined to kill himself what can be done to stop them?
