The Boston Tea Party was a protest of the lowering of the cost of the British tea by the government and the East India tea company who had gotten a bail out from the crown in 1773. The smugglers in the colonies found the Dutch tea that they sold was higher in price than the British tea, so they staged the Boston Tea Party and others in harbors in the colonies ( Hamilton was one of the largest smugglers in the colonies and a founding member of the Son's of Liberty). The cost of tea also went as far back as the Navigation Acts and the restricting of trade to and from the colonies passed from 1650-1733. Tea was also taxed in 1767 in the Townsend Acts.

The sale of taxed tea in the colonies primarily benefited the British East India Company, which sought to reduce its surplus tea and maintain its profits. By enforcing the Tea Act of 1773, the British government aimed to help the struggling company by allowing it to sell tea directly to the colonies at a lower price, even with the tax included. This move was intended to undercut smuggled tea and assert British authority, but it ultimately fueled colonial resentment and resistance, leading to events like the Boston Tea Party.

(in the US) Tea IS taxed along with most all other items offered for sale at retail. (and NO! Tea is NOT considered a food - therefore it IS taxed).yea tea is a food it is taxed
it cost alot and the colonies were being taxed on the tea so they dumped the tea in to the port
well, techinally he taxed everything that was a hot drink. he taxed hot chocolate, tea and coffe, so dont think he only taxed tea.
The Townshend Duty Act, enacted in 1767, placed a tax on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea imported into the colonies. Hope this helps! :)
