The show is loosely based on the 1975 film 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', but includes several new scenes, original songs and reinterpretations of scenes from Holy Grail.
The show was written and developed by Eric Idle (originally a member of Monty Python) over the course of several years. He has not revealed publicly the details or duration of his writing period. It is known however that he periodically attempted to gain the help of other Monty Python members, all of whom refused to indulge in writing a stage play. He than proceeded on his own to write the script and lyrics (with some additional help on the musical score from John Du Prez and Neil Innes).
Spamalot had its first preview showing in 2004 in Chicago. It's official launch and ongoing showtimes began on Broadway in 2005. It has since continued to tour Europe and North America.
It is likely the script was not fully completed until early 2004 when casting began.

Spamalot won the Tony for Best Musical in 2005.
