There is a fuse and relay, under the hood in a fuse box. More commonly though, the system will have low Freon. there is a low Freon switch that shuts down the system if the pressure is too low.
Refrigerant... it's only Freon if it was manufactured by Dupont and marketed under that name... and a 2000 model year vehicle will use R134a refrigerant and PAG compressor oil.
It is either on or near the recievr dryer in the right rear of the engine compartment. To corrrectly add freon, you need gauges and a refrigerant recovery system
