The founders of New Jersey, Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret, established the colony to profit from real estate.Carteret left Europe after being granted the land by King Charles (and the Duke of York) for bravery during the British Civil War, during which Carteret had lost his original position as governor of the Isle of Jersey.
