In all likelihood, you are overworking the area and chewing up the skin. That or you have your machine tuned badly, or even quite possibly, you have the power supply turned up too high. But for the most part, play close attention to the skin whilst you are tattooing.
Having a good light is just as important as having a finely tuned machine. Get yourself an LED office lamp, or get a natural sun lamp that they sell in craft stores. This will allow you to see how much ink you have just laid down into the skin, and it will also let you see how much trauma you have done to the skin. In most instances, you will only be able to go over an area that you are coloring or shading at most three to four times before you start to do damage.
So in summation...make sure that you don't have the needle set too deep, the power supply is not too high, tune your machine, and don't overwork the skin. Perfect your technique on yourself...the thighs are great practice area for any apprentice, and I tattooed my thighs when I was learning. This helps you to perfect your lining and shading techniques on living human tissue as opposed to dead pig flesh, or the plastic fake skin stuff that they sell. Also, it will help you to perfect having a light, yet effective hand on your clients, and they will love you all the more for it. Best of luck.
