The wires are fine, they were engineered to handle the electrical load of normal operation. If the wires have overheated it's because something shorted out or someone connected the electrical wrong.
Follow the plug wires form the spark plugs. If they go to a cylinder then that's the cap. It should unbolt out or have fasteners. It could be a DIS distrbutorless ignition system. Meaning the plug wires go into a square block which is the ignition coil assembly. These systems do not have a cap and rotor.

Did you put a starter on it ? If so, Then you have put the starter wires in the wrong place are you have the big battery wire touching the small wire that goes to the starter. Recheck the wiring on the starter.
