It is not as strange as you might think, it has had me wondering too, and I think I know why, or a reasonable theory anyway. It is a great example of how humans are unique in the animal world. we like to carry out our toilet needs very much in private. The coughing is a sub-consious warning system. It lets others know you have the bath-room for the moment, and you will not take kindly to any encroachments. Sound ridiculous? I thought so at first, but your room-mate is not alone. Observe for yourself whenever you get the opportunity at any gatherings or parties, I think you will soon agree.
