There were several flaws to the Articles of Confederation.

  1. There was no executive branch, meaning that there couldn't be a leader to guide the country
  2. There were 13 different currencies, which would be extremely difficult to trade with.
  3. Difficult to ally: In order for foreign countries to ally with the United States, they had to sign 13 treaties, from all the colonies.
  4. In order to amend the article, there had to be a unanimous vote.
  5. Optional taxation: Nobody wants to pay taxes, so they didn't. The government began to lose money and couldn't support itself.
  6. Weak central government: The federal government could not control the states as states were more powerful than the federal.

Since they required ratification by all thirteen states for the Articles to go into effect, it wasn't until March 1, 1781 that the Articles were finally ratified.
