To replace a shifter sheet bushing on a Suzuki Samurai, start by removing the shifter knob and the surrounding trim panel to access the shifter mechanism. Disconnect the old bushing, typically located at the base of the shifter, and clean the area before installing the new bushing. Ensure it fits snugly and reassemble the shifter by reinserting the trim and knob. Test the shifter for smooth operation before taking the vehicle for a drive.

If you have a manual transmission, it may need a new plastic bushing at the bottom of the shifter. My 1991 Toyota pickup kept slipping out of gear due to a deteriorated plastic bushing. I picked up a new bushing at the local Toyota parts department for around $11.
Its under the cover where the shifter is..Wierd place...and hard to find. So can you tell me why my 92 cabriolet is idling way too fast?
The shifters main problem is always on the bushing. What you need to do is to loosen the bottles holding oneÊ end and the clip then remove and install the new bushing.
The Volvo 960 does not use a cable type shifter, it uses a rod style shifter linkage. It is a rod from the shifter and one from the transmission connected by a long rod. There is a bushing at each pivot point.
You probably don't need to replace the $200+ cable. Just the shifter bushing or bushing connector (or both). See the answer here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_install_Shift_Cable_Bushing_for_saturn It's a $50 or less solution requiring about 15-20 minutes to effect repairs.
It is either a bad shifter bushing, or a bad shift collar. Lets hope it's the bushing, push down on the shifter ( engine off ) use a little force and push and pull on it like you are trying to shift it, but put some downward force to it as well, if the bushings are the problem it will pop out.
