Throw the bike in the garbage and get a used bike on Craigslist from Trek, Cannondale, Raleigh, Specialized, Nishiki, K2, Schwinn (older), Fuji. That bike is junk and will only frustrate and cost you more money to "get it right" than it's worth. Every component on it is bottom of the barrel and will eventually need to be replaced sooner rather than later. I don't mean to be such a downer, but really, get a better bike and spend your time riding as opposed to working on something that'll never be the bike a used, quality bike is.
