How do you get rid of the smell of dead animal on your dog?

Dead rat smell is one of the hardest smells to get rid of, the first thing that you should do is to locate the dead rat, often times he is in the wall or the ceiling. once you find and remove the dead rat and all the insulation and Sheetrock that the dead rat has come into contact with, you can replace with new insulation and new Sheetrock, just removing the rat will not solve the smell problem. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE ALL THING THE RAT MADE CONTACT WITH WHILE DECOMPOSING! Once you have done all of this, the smell will slowly fade as the air in the home is circulated. But only remember one thing, there is never only one rat!

In general, the odor is not airborne, but rather is subsumed in the flooring, dry wall and furniture of the dwelling. Professional cleanup with an ozone remover, chemical odor and stain blockers and replacement of floors and walls may be required. The regular methods of cleaning are not likely to be successful.

Buy shampoo and or conditioner for dogs, something with a fragrance is usually best for this point, if the dog is big you can wash it on the grass, or if its small you can out it in a bathtub or sink, but I recommend you do it out on the grass. Warm water (do not boil it) and divide it equally between two buckets with a sponge. Add dog shampoo to one of the buckets. Go outside where your dog is waiting and carefully pour a little bit of shampooed water over the dog a few times and then get the sponge and some new shampoo and start scrubbing the dog. Once you feel that you have washed the dog enough depending on how bad the smell was, get the other bucket of water (the clean water) and pour it over the dog to rinse them off. To prevent your dog getting a chill, get an old rag or towel to dry them up and if they still smell, feel free to try and wash them again until the stench wears off.

First you need to locate the dead rat.

Mix one bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide with 1/2 cup of baking soda in a large bucket. This will foam up but mix it well until all the baking soda is dissolved. Add a squirt of regular dish soap and mix.

apply this solution to the area the rat was found and allow to soak. Wipe down after five minutes with clean water and repeat.
