First,turn ignition key to start.Set Park brakes.With foot on brakes shift to "D" or 3 or 2.Remove "U" clip from shift knob (pocket knife works best).Pull knob off stick.Open console lid and remove the 2 small screws at the bottom of the console.Disconnect light and cigarette lighter wires.Lift off console.Reverse order to re-install.
Note: U-clip comes out towards dash.
lift up the center plate on the console were your gear select is after you remove your shift lever and all the lever pieces and there you can remove the top of the console and the bottom has 4 bolts 10mm remove those and you shift your car all the way down to first or low gear and lift it up un plug the harness and there you go
Just remove the console and you can get to it.

Install the accessory power receptacles. 3. Install the traction control switch. 4. Install the HUD switch, if equipped. 5. Install the wiring harness. 6. Position the floor console to the vehicle. 7. Connect the electrical connector at the front of the floor console. Slide the floor console toward the front of the car. 8. Install the shift handle. Install the shift handle screw. 9. Shift the transaxle to P. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice. 10. Install the floor console bolts. Adjust the front seats as required. Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in). 11. Release the park brake.
Escort doesn't have a gear shift cable. It has a gear shift rod. To remove it: Remove the shift control rod nut and bolt Take off the shift knob. Remove the console. Remove the shift boot. Pry out the shifter spring. Lift the shift ever out of the housing. Take the nuts that hold the shift housing on the end of the extension bar. Take the extension bar from the transaxle, lower the shift housiing and take the shift control rod from the transmission.
Remove the cover of the console..around 4 screw ..then lift the cover ,you can see the small bulb on it..
You have to remove the console cover. This starts with two screws in the console storage tray.
