I just replaced the trunk struts on my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have no mechanical experience and i replaced them myself, so its a pretty easy fix. On the top of your trunk there will be a piece held in my two bolts. Just remove these bolts and the piece should come right off. on the side of your trunk should be the other piece. There will be a little spring attached to your ball joint that is easily removed with a flat head screw driver. Once this spring is removed you should be able to pull the par away from the ball joint and wallah. Replace just like you took off.
Weak trunk struts on a 2003 VW Jetta will not allow the lid to properly stay open. To replace the struts unbolt the mounts holding them to the car and replace them.
You will need a torx adapter (I don't remember the size). After that make sure that the trunk is supported by something. Because it's very heavy, and you do not want it to fall on your head. Then replace the struts one at time. Always change the struts in pairs.
