They had power steering. The boxes are the same. What's different is what hole the tie rod ends are installed in on the arms bolted to the spindle assembly.
You can find a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro belt diagram at most Chevrolet dealerships. The belt diagram can also be found in Chevrolet service manuals.
The impeller has probably broken a blade. You will need to replace the pump.

Oh, dude, replacing the turn signal lever on a 1979 Chevrolet Malibu is like a walk in the park... if that park is full of confusing wires and tiny screws. You basically gotta remove the steering column cover, locate the lever assembly, disconnect it, swap it out with a new one, and then put everything back together. It's like a puzzle, but with more grease and frustration.

It's between the engine and transmission. The only way to disconnect it from the crankshaft is to remove either the engine or transmission... or both.
To adjust the tension on the power steering belt of a 1979 Silverado, first, locate the power steering pump and loosen the mounting bolts that secure it. Then, gently push the pump toward the engine to increase tension on the belt. Once the desired tension is achieved—typically about half an inch of deflection when pressed in the middle—tighten the mounting bolts securely. Finally, check the tension again to ensure it remains correct.
