It is a BIG job. Unless you have a lot of tools and are a good mechanic, take it to a garage. If you want to do it yourself get a manual from AUTOBOOKSONLINE.COM.
The 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback typically uses a hydraulic clutch system. This design features a single diaphragm spring and a cable or hydraulic mechanism for engagement and disengagement. The clutch is generally a standard clutch disc and pressure plate setup, suitable for both manual transmission versions of the vehicle. For specific replacement parts or upgrades, it's advisable to consult the vehicle's service manual or a Subaru dealership.
To fix the clutch on a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback, first, ensure the vehicle is securely lifted and supported. Remove the transmission by disconnecting the drive shafts, shift linkage, and any electrical connections. Once the transmission is out, replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing. Reassemble the transmission and ensure proper alignment before reinstalling everything. Always consult a repair manual for detailed steps and torque specifications.
It will cost approximately $450 to replace the clutch in your 1997 Ford Escort. The clutch will cost approximately $200 and require four hours of labor to install.

To replace the clutch cable is pretty simple. First put on your e-brake and jack and secure your car. Next, simply unbolt the clutch cable at both ends and remove. To install is the exact reverse. And that's it! I would suggest going to your nearsest auto parts store and picking up a Chilton's manual for your car, it's invaluable for stuff like this. Hope this helps.
If you are not experienced or very mechanically inclined this will be hard. Start out by getting a Haynes Or Chiltons, then follow the direction. You have to take the transmission out, then remove and replace the clutch. It is not as easy as it sounds, and the tranny is heavy.
That's a problem with your AWD. Transfer Clutch Case I believe. I had that same problem about a year ago. Had to replace the Transfer Clutch Case...I believe it was about $2000
