If it is a standard shift and not an automatic, yes as long as you put it in neutral. If it is an automatic you can disconnect the drive shaft. Otherwise you cannot tow it or you will damage the transmission as it will overheat.

How do you tow an automatic with a car dolly?

Do you have to disconnect the drive shaft on a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SL when towing?

N0...I don't know of any street car you have to do that to...unless you're trying to steal someone's driveshaft. I disagree with the above statement. The MB 450SL is, of course, a rear-wheel drive car. The rear wheels of a rear-wheel drive car are connected to the transmission via the driveshaft. When the rear wheels turn, the transmission is turning. If you tow the car for a short distance with the rear wheels on the ground, you should have no problem. However, if you tow the car for a long distance with the rear wheels on the ground, there is a good chance that you will damage the transmission. Removing the driveshaft means that only the rear wheels and rear axle will turn, so there is no chance of damage to the transmission. An alternative is to tow a rear-wheel drive car from the rear, so that only the front wheels will be turning during the tow. If you do this, you must lock the steering wheel, so that the front wheels will be locked in the straight-on position.

Can you tow a rear wheel drive car backwards on a tow dolly?

YES, as long as you have enough clearance between the ground and front air dam and the bumper, also make sure the steering wheel is secure, do not trust the lock in the column, strap the wheel some how, and always use tow lights and safety chains

What is the best car to flat tow with motorhome?

Something with a manual transmission and either rear wheel drive or four wheel drive.. even better in the case of the latter if it has a manual transfer case. Vehicles with front wheel drive or asymmetrical all wheel drive are generally not recommended for flat towing.

Can a BMW 325 be towed using a regular tow hitch on a Uhaul truck I am making an 8 hour trip.?

the 325 is either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and should not be towed with the drive wheels rolling for a long distance, or high speeds. Across town would be okay, but longer than that is going to do bad things to the transmission- unless you disconnnect the drive shaft from the transmission. If you did that, it would be okay. If you have a rear-wheel drive, perhaps you could tow with the rear wheels off the ground (car trailering facing rearward).
