Unplugging the coil wire and not grounding it, yes that can damage the coil.
You remove the 10 mm bolt on the coil pack and unplug the coil. you may have to remove an hold down too to get to #2 or #3 easy to do remove coil by pulling the coil pack setting aside use spark plug socket and a extintion your good
Pull each coil plug off one at a time while the engine is running... The coil pack that is bad will NOT have a difference in engine noise, but the ones that are good you will hear a slight decrease in engine noise when you unplug the coil and then plug it back up again... Hope this helps everyone!

A 2002 Jeep Wrangler has coil springs.
There is a 7 mm bolt that holds the coil down to the block. It might take a swivel on a socket wrench with an extension or two to get at it. Once you pull that bolt you can pull the coil up and out after you unplug it. If it's on plug 7 or eight (back two on drivers side) you will have to pull bolts holding fuel rail in place and move it out of the way in order to get the coil out.
