You need to get one of the middle seats out, better both middle seats out, then remove the rear seats. Once inside, remove the back panel as per instructions in the owners manual for replacing tail lights and stop lights. In my manual it is pages 317 and 318. You need to remove the top strap screws first. You do this from inside the van with a work light.
Of course, this strap is on the bottom of the door when the rear hatch door is closed. Gently pry out the bottom half of the plastic cover, the cover just snaps out with white plugs that fit into holes in the metal frame of the inside rear hatch. These plugs are just fitted into sockets on the plastic inside cover. They are a pain when you try to put the cover back on. They shake loose and some times don't line up with the holes in the door frame.
You then use a screw driver to pop open the spring latch. You will see the cable that attaches to the outside handle, just follow it to the broken black plastic hook that opens the lock. When you have the rear door (hatch) open, remove the entire piece and take it to Toyota parts dept. As soon as you show it to them they will tell you they have it in stock. These damn things break all the time. Just pay the man and get the whole unit. I tried to fix mine by drilling a hole , pinning it and using crazy glue. It will not work, too much pressure. A new one costs about 35.00. Make sure you have all the white plugs in the pastic cover and then just snap it in.

You need to order the part(s) first, which you can do at your local Toyota dealership or at an auto parts store. Then, you simply disassemble the tailgate, remove the defective latch component, and put in the new part, and then reassemble the tailgate.
To repair the tailgate bottom latch on a 1998 Toyota 4Runner, first, remove the plastic cover from the tailgate to access the latch assembly. Inspect the latch for any broken parts or misalignment; clean and lubricate the mechanism if it appears dirty or rusty. If any components are damaged, replace them with new parts. Reassemble the tailgate and test the latch to ensure it operates smoothly.
If the tailgate handle on your S10 Blazer is broken, you can try accessing the tailgate through the interior. Remove the interior panel near the tailgate to reach the latch mechanism directly. You can then manually pull the latch with a tool to open the tailgate. Alternatively, you might consider using a slim jim or other tools to unlock it from the outside, but be cautious to avoid damage.
If the tailgate latch on your 2005 Chevy Avalanche is broken, you can try using a flathead screwdriver to pry open the latch mechanism from the inside, if accessible. Alternatively, you can remove the tailgate cover to access the latch assembly directly and manually release it. If these methods don't work, consider using a slim jim or a similar tool to manipulate the latch. However, if you're unsure or uncomfortable with this approach, it might be best to seek assistance from a professional mechanic.

If necessary, loosen the bolts securing the latch to the tailgate, then reposition it to ensure proper engagement with the tailgate's catch. Tighten the bolts back in place and test the latch to ensure it closes securely.

To open a broken tailgate on a Ford Ranger, first check for any visible damage or obstructions that may be preventing it from opening. If the latch mechanism is jammed, you can try using a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it open. If that doesn't work, accessing the tailgate from inside the truck bed or removing the tailgate panel may be necessary to manually release the latch. Always consult your vehicle’s manual for specific instructions related to your model.
