Programming for a 2000 to 2004 Montero Sport

1. Locate the Data Port under the dash near the base of the steering wheel column. ______________________ \ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 / \ 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 / \___________________/

2. Insert keys in ignition and leave in the OFF position.

3. Make sure there are metal contact pins in terminals 1, and connect the Data Port terminal 1 with a suitable jumper wire to a good ground, leave jumper wire connected through out the programming procedure. Make sure you know which terminals are 1 and be sure to use a fused jumper wire for safety.

4. Within 10 seconds after connecting the jumper wire, turn the ignition switch to the ACC position and then back to OFF (do this as quick as you can). Repeat this procedure two more times (very quickly-you should be able to get the 3 ACC to OFF cycles in less than 2 seconds). Note: The doors will automatically lock and unlock once at this time indicating that the system is in the programming mode.

5. Press the LOCK button on the remote to be registered three times within 10 seconds. Upon successful programming, the doors will lock and unlock once.

6. If there are two remotes, register the first, then register the second by repeating step 5 within one minute. After completing the second programming, the doors will lock and unlock once.

7. Disconnect the programming wire and remove the keys from the ignition.

8. Check operation of remotes.

In most cases, If you did not get the vehicle into the programming mode, then you are not even up to the remotes themselves yet. You may have an issue with the car itself and more likely you have made an error in the procedure. Sometimes going faster or slower can be the key to success.

Numerous people swear they have followed the procedures "to the letter," and are not successful with the programming. Most often, they have not actually followed the sequence properly. Any small error in sequence, or exceeding mentioned time limits will result in a failure to obtain the desired results. If the timing is very short, and you have to go back and read the instructions, you have in all likelyhood exceeded the time limits and you will be unsuccessful. Some people still have difficulty and just can not follow the instructions. We suggest you find a very good locksmith in your area or go to your local dealer for assistance. Locksmiths are usually somewhat cheaper than dealers.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If at any time you mess up the sequence or exceed the timing mentioned in any instructions, start the vehicle, then turn it off, remove the key, and close any open doors to reset the vehicle back to square one. Then begin the process anew. This must be done prior to each and every attempt at programming! Failure to do so will only result in frustration as you will not be successful in your next attempt either.

Many programming procedures call for the ignition to be placed in the " on " position. This is turning the key so the dash lights illuminate....the so called "idiot lights," come on. This is the position right before you would engage the starter to start the vehicle. YOU DO NOT START THE VEHICLE !
