This is a very easy job (5 minutes a side). You can easily save money on the labor and will probably save on the parts as well. All you need is a flat blade screw driver (or the little tool they give you to open a gallon of paint works great), and someone to hold the lift gate up (or I used a board to prop it up and pushed up with my head when I needed more lift).

IMPORTANT money saving tip - Honda encourages you to replace both sides. They are about $55/cylinder! I found that one side was perfectly good and one side was bad. With one good and one bad cylinder, the lift gate will slam shut, giving the impression that they are both bad. This isn't true. When the cylinders fail, they stop holding the gate up and actually PULL it down. So with one good and one bad, or just one good on in and the other removed, the gate will slam shut.

1. First, there is a circular clip on each end (a band of metal about a 1/4" in thickness) that holds the cylinder to the car. You need to loosen this. Their are 1/4" slots above and below it to stick you screw driver in and pry it out. You don't need remove it all the way. Just get it so it is pulled away from the housing.

2. Once this clip is loosened, you will be able to pull the cylinder off the post it is mounted to. You may need to wiggle the lift gate up and down a little.

3. Once the cylinder is out, evaluate it. If you are able to grab both ends and easily make the cylinder go in and out...it's shot. If (like mine) the cylinder is extended and you can't really push it in by hand...put it back in...it's fine.

4. To put a new cylinder back in, you don't need to mess with the clips, just position the end over the post on the car and shove it on. (If you are reinstalling a cylinder you took off, first push the circle clip back on to it's original position). On the cylinders that I got from Honda, the ends were twisted the wrong way. To correct this, put the skinny end on first and then grab the fat end and you should be able to twist it into place.

Voila! You just saved yourself some money!

How can you replace end gate or gate and not gate with a nand gate?

when the two inputs are shorted, a NAND gate acts like a NOT gate. hence AND = NAND + NOT For OR gate, inverse both the inputs before connecting them to a NAND gate. So three NAND gates would be needed.
