one way to do it s to get an in depth service manual and take a multimeter to the electrical system or you could just unplug the spark plugs but not remove them, and plug in a set of spare plus into the spark plug wires and ground them to check for a spark. if it is sparking just fine, then it could be a timing or a fuel problem or the engine could just not be spinning fast enough to start

What could cause the battery light to be dim when ignition turned and then remain dim when the car has started on a 96 ford escort diesel van.?

Sometimes a weak diode within the alternator can cause this. Your alternator may test out fine but have it checked anyway. I hope this helps you. Mark get your alternator checked out as it sounds to me like its on the way out

Would a weak battery be the cause of a hesitation when turning on ignition?

Could be. But it might be an alternator problem instead of a batery problem. You need a good alternator to keep the bttery recharged. I wouldn't run out and buy a battery without getting the alternator checked.

What can be wrong with a 1997 Ford Escort that does not start even after replacing the battery and alternator?

If your headlights, horn and everything work, I would have the ignition switch checked out. Make sure you checked all ingition fuses and relays first.

How do you adjust the serpentine belt tension on your 1992 town car which you think is causing engine to die when you turn on heat and fan?

Serpentine belts have an automatic tensioner, which cannot be adjusted. But your problem sounds like poor alternator performance, have it checked, at your local parts store most do it for free.

1994 Mercury Grand Marquis. The battery light stays on and causes a drain It goes out when the ignition is off Any ideas Difficult to start and stalls. Changed alternator and battery checks ok. Help?

The battery light isn't an indicator that the battery is always bad. What the light should really be is a picture of an alternator, but most people wouldn't recognize that. Have the alternator checked off the vehicle to make sure it is good, then have it checked on the vehicle, (many places like Auto Zone do this for free). If it's not charging on the vehicle, you could have an alternator fuse bad or your car might even have an inline fuse between the alternator and battery. Many Ford products have a large fusible link between the alternator and battery, and if it's bad, there is no power going to the battery from the alternator. Good Luck!!!!

How do you replace the alternator on a 1997 Pontiac Firebird?

Hello, I have a 1997 Firebird V-6. It is right on top. Just remove the serpentine belt from the alternator, unplug the electrical connection on the back of the alternator, remove the mounting bolts and install the new alternator. I have not replaced one in my bird yet, but I checked the Hanes manual and it is the same. I am not a professional mechanic, but I have replaced a few in my lifetime. Good luck. John

1989 Olds 88 making a sound from the generator when accelerating ever since having the serpentine belt changed and wondering what the generator does and can it be driven for a couple days until fixed?

Could be the wrong type belt installed, or if it is not a serpentine belt but a regular V-Belt it may be adjusted too tightly or too loosely. Can also be a defective idler assembly. Have this checked ASAP. Alternator bearing damage may occur if you continue to drive the car.
