I am not famailar with your model year but,have owned my 87 since new.The coolant temperature sender should be at the thermostat housing.It should have single wire connector going to it that should just slip on or clip on.This is pretty common and even on another car I own a 85 the sender is at the thermostat housing.It should be at this location and go online to autozone or advance auto parts enter your rides info and look up the water temp sender it should show a picture of what it looks like for reference and you will need to buy it anyway.

The coolant temp sensor for the gauge is located near the front passenger side of the engine near the thermostat. It will be pointing slightly down and to the front of the truck. Will have a single yellow wire attached. The coolant temperature sensor for the ECU is bolted into the intake manifold in front of the carb. It will have a green 2 pin molded body.
