The short answer would be to turn on the parking lights.

However, here's a little more detail. Subaru has begun designing cars that turn off accessories when the ignition is cut off. This includes cigar lighter plugs, headlights, parking lights, etc. The switch on top of your steering column is to allow you to bypass the system and turn on your parking lights when the ignition is off...which would be useful if you broke down on the side of the road at night.

What would cause my dashboard warning light to stay on when the emergency brake is off.?

Warning Light for Parking [Emergency] BrakeUsually, the cause for this is that the switch used to sense the position of the Parking brake lever is either out of adjustment, or the contacts within the switch are stuck together. The switches are usually operated by a "plunger" pin which is spring loaded. When the Parking Brake is applied, it presses the plunger in, closing the switch, and causing the light to turn on.When the Parking Brake is "OFF, an internal [usually] spring pushes the plunger "out," opening the warning light circuit and thus turning the light off.Occasionally on some vehicles, this is just backwards, IE, plunger "in" turns light on, and plunger "out" turns light off.You will have to analyze the operation of your Parking Brake in relation to when the light is on or off compared to the brake lever position. The switch is "adjusted" by moving it closer or farther away from the arm that pushes the plunger pin in, or allows it to move out.

Have 02 Suzuki XL7 no owners manual How do you turn on just the park lights?

If your car has daytime running lights (standard in Canada) then the only way to turn on just the parking lights is when the car is in park or neutral, the light switch is in the park light position and the parking brake is on. Then the headlights will turn off. Any other configuration means the headlights will be on. On this car, parking lights can truly only be used when parked!

What is wrong with a 2001 Legacy Outback when you turn off the car and the tail lights stay on?

Try checking the brake light switch. The brake lights are working fine. The running lights are staying on. The solution was the parking light switch on top of the steering column was in the "on" position. Switched it to off and problem solved. Actually never used the switch, guess one of the kids was playing with it... Thank you! That was a simple fix - i didn't even know that switch was there!
