Loosely based on a Ford Focus, the important bits are all Mazda-built, and therefore tend towards Japanese levels of reliability. If you want a mid-size hatchback with good handling and bombproof reliability, the 3 is an excellent choice.
Ford Motor Company had up to 25% share in Mazda. I am unsure if this is still the case. This is why the Mazda Navajo was essentially the same as the Ford Explorer. Also, this is why the Mazda 626 had similar design and transmission as the Ford Contour. I am also unsure who the majority owner of Mazda is. Hope this helps
