A grinding noise when downshifting to 4th gear in a 2000 Celica GTS typically indicates an issue with the transmission, such as worn synchronizers or damaged gear teeth specifically for that gear. The synchronizer helps match the speeds of the gears for smooth engagement; if it's failing, it won’t allow for a proper shift into 4th. Additionally, low Transmission Fluid or contamination could exacerbate the problem. It's advisable to have the transmission inspected and serviced to prevent further damage.
The most likely cause is that the synchromesh is worn on second gear, if this is the case it's a box out and repair job.
Not engaging clutch completely speed shifting ( badly ) Gear grinding Downshifting at high revs shifting without the clutch Anytime the gears are forced together or grind the ears on the syncro are worn down and wont fit together smoothly
Synchronizer maybe. not sure if that's how you spell it. I grind a little downshifting into second but not when shifting into any other gears. A mechanic buddy told me that's probably what it was.
Klinklang learns Gear Grind at level 1, which means Klink had it and have evolved.
Clutch needs adjusting or the synchronizers are going bad.Clutch needs adjusting or the synchronizers are going bad.
If it isn't slipping it is downshifting to 3rd gear
you can on most, but it is harder on the transmission than downshifting as speed decreases.
Downshifting refers to the process of shifting to a lower gear in a vehicle to decrease speed or increase torque. This is commonly done when slowing down, going uphill, or to better match engine speed with road speed.

On a 2000 Toyota Celica GTS, the airbag module is typically located under the center console, near the gear shifter. It can also be found under the dashboard, close to the steering column. For precise access, it's advisable to consult the vehicle's service manual or seek assistance from a qualified technician.
All I know is I got mine up to 70 mph in 4th gear and only at 4000 rpm.
