i think its to let the engine warm up. because all the cars i have driven seem to avoid overdrive gear until the engine warms up. Witch makes sense because higher rpms keep the oil pressure high so the cold oil witch is hard to pump will reach all components of the engine. it probably helps the transmission too but I'm not to sure about that one. but i don't believe its a defect, unless its stays in 3rd gear forever ever at very high rpms, witch you should really avoid on a cold engine.
When a auto trans is cold the clutch bands hold better but after they get hot they slip. Find a transmission shop asap.
On the three speed, it is inside. On the overdrive trans, it is on the front outside. On the three speed, it is inside. On the overdrive trans, it is on the front outside.
Inside the auto trans.
Transmission problem overdrive slip at 45mph what to do
If it was a manual trans it was a five speed. If it was an auot then it was a three speed with an electronic overdrive. So with the electronic overdrive it was a four speed trans but the overdrive failed frequently and was disabled by many owners.
a 1989 trans am gta has a limited slip differential
take it to a trans shop.
3.31 for base differential, 3.55 for limited slip manual trans, 3.31 for limited slip auto trans
Overdrive is the normally allowed position , but unless the speed is higher it won't shift into overdrive anyway
No vehicles are factory made with the Gear Vendors overdrive. It is an aftermarket part.
Yes, the transmission will slip and eventually burn out if you continue to drive it in that condition.
Safe but unnecessary. The trans will be constantly shifting in and out of overdrive in traffic and will put unnecessary wear on the transmission. Save it for the freeway.
