check the Transmission Fluid. Mine was quite low and I had the same problem. Topped it up and problem was solved..... now find out why the fluid level is low.
A 1994 Mazda Miata's automatic transmission may slip in 4th gear if the bands are heavily worn. When the bands become worn, they are unable to grip properly and cause slippage.
You are not supposed to "lug" an engine- keep the revs up by shifting into a lower gear
don't accelerate as much or change up a gear
Bent shift linkage or you are parking on a hill.
I would guess you are low on transmission fluid.
Need to know what the problem is. Need more information.
The shift gate or the synchronizers can be worn. Also the clutch can need adjustment if possible.
neutral safety switch/ or reverse switch faulty thanks. how would i go about replacing the safety switch? is it difficult?

You must remove the speedo drive gear to fill the gearbox.
See the youtube video on gear shifter linkage failure...
