Armstrong was a jet fighter pilot during the Korean War. After the war, he attended Purdue University and majored in aeronautical engineering. After graduating in 1955, he applied to NACA, the precursor to NASA located at Edwards Air Force Base. There were no openings, but they liked him well enough to place him at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Labraatory in Cleveland, Ohio. A few months later, a job opened up at Edwards and Armstrong was hired there. He worked as a test pilot for 7 years before applying for astronaut training at NASA. He was accepted in spite of the fact that he turned his application in a week late. Armsrtong's first space flight occurred 4 years later. On July 20, 1969, he became the first person to walk on the moon.
