At 4:17 PM (EDT) on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon, and at 10:56 PM Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon, followed 20 minutes later by Aldrin. During there moon walk that lasted over 2 hours they placed devices to measure solar wind reaching the moon, a device to receive laser beams from Earth to determine the exact distance between the two, and a seismometer to measure moonquakes and impacts from meteors. They also brought back about 50 pounds of moon rock and soil samples, and took several photographs. After 21 hours and 38 minutes they used Eagle's (their landing craft) ascent stage to launch it back into orbit and redock with the command module Columbia (not the Space Shuttle) which was piloted by astronaut Michael Collins. They landed their spacecraft in the Pacific Ocean about 900 miles from Hawaii on July 24. They were then placed in quarantine for 21 days to check for any diseases they may have contracted while on the moon.

A total of twelve astronauts landed on the moon between 1969 and 1972 as part of NASA's Apollo program. The first moon landing was by Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969, followed by five more landings until Apollo 17 in December 1972.
Apollo 11, which launched on July 16, 1969, was the mission that successfully landed the first men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, on the moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong famously became the first person to walk on the moon's surface.
