It really depends on the sport. If you take football or something similar, it makes virtually no difference.

But if you take Fencing for example, it would be a much larger disadvantage to fence with your 'off' hand than with your 'main' hand.

One disadvantage with leftie golfers is that they all need special Golf clubs which are often more expensive.

However in say Baseball, being a left handed pitcher or batter, can give you a large advantage over someone who is right-handed.
