The iPod is just an overpriced MP3 player. It's a brand name that has become synonymous with the type of product it is, such as Xerox or Kleenex. The iPod is a very nice machine, but many people (myself included) find its strict ties to the iTunes music manager a little prohibitive.

If you'd like a recommendation for an MP3 player, and you're just starting out, I would recommend Sandisk's Sansa series, such as the Fuze. They are well built and relatively inexpensive, with features the iPod doesn't have, such as FM radio, voice recording, and support for many music file types (MP3, OGG, FLAC, and so on). They are easy to figure out and have very good sound quality.

Where the iPod excels is in its seamless integration of the MP3 player (the iPod), the music manager (iTunes) and the online store (accessible through the iTunes music manager when you're connected to the internet). For most people, all three are very easy to use, with an intuitive menu system. For me, I was never able to figure out iTunes, and I don't like the lack of control you have over the program.

See if your friends have an iPod or other MP3 player you can play with. Buy whichever one you're comfortable with.
