Laura Ingalls Wilder mentioned making corn cob dolls in her "Little House" series of books. These simple dolls were made by shaping a corncob and dressing it with fabric scraps or corn husks to create a toy. They were a popular handmade toy during the pioneer days.
Laura's very first doll was a corncob named Susan, and so likewise she was made of corn, and wrapped in a bit of cloth. Laura's second doll was a rag doll called Charlotte and Caroline (her Ma) made her, with blue and pink calico cloth for the dress, black yarn for the hair, which she raveled to make curly, black buttons for the eyes, drew eyebrows with a black pencil, and made ink from pokeberries to give her rosy cheeks and red lips. Her body was cloth as well.
Laura's first doll was a corncob wrapped in a piece of cloth. Her second doll was a doll named Charlotte. That was in the book; Little House in the Big Woods. So Laura was around the age of 3/4.
She is described as strong willed, brave, happy, and hard working. Physically, she was very short - 4',11" tall. She had a rather round figure, (which she hated, calling herself "roly-poly"), but was, by the standards of her time, very pretty, with roan brown hair and violet eyes.

Laura's strongest life-long hobby was reading, and perhaps after that, writing poetry. The writing of her famous books she did not look at as a hobby, she saw that differently.Laura also collected dishware. Two of the designs she collected were rose chintz and blue willow. She became an expert in raising laying hens and wrote her advice in a journal titled The Missourian Ruralist. Other articles regarding farm-life followed.
Kirsten, the American Girl doll was a pioneer girl in 1854 growing up in Minnesota. This is very reminiscent of Laura Ignalls Wilder and Little House on the Prairie.
