Jean-Paul Sartre had a keen interest in politics which led him to research the works of Karl Marx. Philosophically, this is seen with his continuous dialogue with Marxist thinking. Sartre accepted the practical force of Marx's historical materialism but rejected its philosophical basis. Sartre had his own version of the dialectic and his writings contained an attempt to merge dialectics and phenomenology. From an existentialist point of view his fellow philosophers called him a neo-Marxist.

Jean-Paul Sartre was considered a neo-Marxist because of his advocacy for existential Marxism, which combined Marxist ideas with existentialist philosophy. Sartre believed in the importance of individual freedom and responsibility while also recognizing the impact of social structures and class struggle on society. His work focused on how individual choice and societal forces interact to shape human existence.
