my english teacher told me that Charles Dickens had experienced working in the workhouses since his family was poor and his father was in debt prison (a special prison for people who owe a lot of debt).
He thought it wasnt very nice and children didnt deserve to do it especially at a very young age.Infact as soon as You could walk you had to work for you and your family survive.
Thats why he wrote the book about oliver Twist, and his book was sooo popular since he never exactly how his own made up character felt because charles expereinced himself.
thats why he was like a politician since he used to protest against the workhouses.
