There seems to be use of similar names that predate Christianity; the first records are of people returning to England and Scotland from the Crusades in the 12th century. There were sixteen coats of arms granted to people of the Lawson family of Borough Hall in Yorkshire. This spelling of the name was first recorded for Richard Lawisson in 1327 in the Subsidy Rolls of the county of Cumberland. The name means Son of Lawrence.

The Lawson written about in this Answer's Page has created more original art than probably the whole of Europe put together. He also is one of the fittest men at 48.
