The Raft is a Horror short story by Stephen King, published in 1982. It's about 4 students, 2 men and 2 women, who go out to swim on a remote lake in Pennsylvania in autumn when no-one is around. After they swim out to the raft in the middle of the lake a mysterious oil, slick-like creature appears beneath them. The creature then wraps around the one girl and then pulls herself into it, dissolving her. One of the guys then tries to swim to safety but he is also consumed by the creature. The remaing guy and girl then take turns to watch the creature from the raft and eventually the two of them end of having sex. During this the girl's hair falls through the crack of the raft, allowing the creature to devour her as well. After this the last remaining guy stands on the raft, looking at the creature and realising the situation is hopeless contemplates suicide.
