Absolutely none. A true communist state, according to Karl Marx's definition, would not even have a government.

As Marx put it, after capitalism was replaced by socialism, the society would gradually evolve into a true communist state. As it did so, all distinctions between social classes would disappear. As those disappeared the need for one class to repress the others would also disappear. Once society evolved into a single class of people there would no longer be a need for government to create laws to repress other people. Government, or state, would simply wither away and disappear.

Today's so-called "communist" governments are not true communist at all. The Soviet Union was in some ways farther away from true communism than the capitalist states of the West because of the total repression of the citizens that that and other "communist" governments practice.

If there is a "role of the government in communist states" it would actually be in socialist stage during the transition from socialism to communism. Immediately after the overthrow of capitalism, Marx stated a "Dictatorship of the proletariat" would be needed in order to ensure that all vestiges of capitalism are wiped out. This "government" takes control of the means of production for the proletariat as a whole and keeps the country on the road to communism.

As far as government's role in today's so-called communist states, it is simply to ensure that the country is run the way that the political group then in control of the country wants it to be run. As far as the economy of that country goes, the government becomes a central planner determining what is to be produced and what is to be supplied without regard to free market forces as in a capitalist state.
