John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic. He had devoted himself to Catholicism ever since his mother, Mabel Tolkien died in 1904 when he was only 12 years old. An example of this can be seen in his insistance that his wife Edith, an Anglican/Church of England convert to Catholicism and that their children be raised in it. He remained strong in his beliefs until his death.

Tolkien was himself a convert to Roman Catholicism. He was baptised into the Church of England in South Africa where he was born but after his mother returned to England and his father died, she and her children were received into the Catholic church. Their priest, Father Francis Morgan was the children's guardian after she died.
