Charles Dickens married Catherine Thomson Hogarth on April 2, 1836. She was born in Scotland and moved with her family to England in 1834. Her father, George Hogarth, was the editor of the Evening Chronicle where Dickens was a journalist. After the birth of their ten children, and the death of their daughter Dora at eight months, Catherine suffered a nervous breakdown. In 1858, Charles and Catherine separated, a situation that was acrimonious and much publicized, and split the family into two camps. Catherine remained separated from her husband until her death in 1879.
