Dorothy Parker was an American short story writer, poet, critic and satirist. She was also a defender of human rights and a fierce supporter of Martin Luther King Jr.
Born on the 22nd August 1893 in New Jersey, US, she is well known for her witty writing style, her wisecracks and her eye for urban foibles.
She pursued a career in screenwriting for Hollywood movies, earning herself two Academy Award nominations. She was later added to the so-called Hollywood Blacklist due to her political opinions and her support for Martin Luther King Jr (and likely because the male-dominated Hollywood industry hated having a female screenwriter who was better than themselves).
She published many successful poetry books, novellas and short story collections during her lifetime.
She died on the 7th June 1967 of a heart attack, bequeathing her estate in her will to Martin Luther King Jr. Her estate was then passed onto the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) when Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated.
Her ashes remained unclaimed for about 17 years, spending some time in her attorney's filing cabinet, until they were claimed by the NAACP in 1988, who buried her remains in a memorial garden designed specifically for her at their Baltimore headquarters.
