Have the starter tested at your auto parts store. Sounds like a bad solenoid or bad starter.
The starter solenoid is attached to the starter. Follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will lead you to the starter solenoid. The starter would have to be removed to replace the starter solenoid.
The computer only resets when the battery is removed. The alternator just charges the battery, so if the battery is left connected when the alternator is replaced, the computer should not reset.
Without the entire model number I can't tll you where to find the solenoid. But, if you follow the positive (+) battery cable from the battery it will go directly to the solenoid. Unhook the cable from the battery first. Then mark the cables that go on the solenoid so you can put them back on the new solenoid in the same positon. All you have to do is remove the wires from the solenoid and unbolt it from the mower. Then put the new one in it's place and hook the wires up just as you removed them.
The solenoid is on the starter itself. Usually only two bolts and the wire connections need t be removed. First disconnect your battery. Then remove the wires from the solenoid. ( you might want to draw a pic of how they were connected) Then just reverse! pretty easy! Don't forget to re-connect your battery.
The battery cannot be removed quickly! Inductance of the wiring stores energy and keeps the current flowing and decaying smoothly. There will be an opposite polarity, higher voltage pulse on the battery terminals, limited by the circuit capacitance only.

In my case I have a 1999 SL1 and the clicking sounds where the relays for the electric door locks. I removed them and I have not have the battery drained. I have not replaced them yet.
V = IR, so if you double the voltage without changing the resistance, the current will also double.
Your CMOS battery has died. This battery is typically a small, quarter-sized CR2032 battery located on the motherboard, which can be easily removed and replaced. The CR2032 battery can be purchased just about anywhere batteries are sold.
The fiberglass panel at the side of the battery has to be removed and the battery is removed sideways.
