This happened to me as well. Don't forget to re-charge the battery as well. Since the belt broke you probably can assume that the alternator stopped charging the battery at least for a moment.
A few things, engine not running, loose belt, or seized pully on idler/tensioner or other acc.
The system that the belt runs on ,is called a serpentine system,it's a one belt set-up ,and they are self adjusted by a tensioner, sounds like...1- Your tensioner is seized,or ..2-your belt is streched..Sometimes the tensioner can be free'd by taking it of and working it in with lubrication, but if not,get a new tensioner and a belt, hope it helps.
Usually belts shred due to 1) bad or seized power steering pump or belt tensioner 2) Mis-Aligned pulleys or belt tensioner. 3) gremlins (or maybe nicked the belt during other repairs and it wore badly) just happened to me and I replaced tensioner as mine had seized. it started making horrible squealing sounds after the repair. I replaced the pump and all was well after that.
Assuming it is screeching in the area of the belt and pulleys, my problem was that the belt tensioner had seized and needed to be replaced. Noise problem was solved.
most likely your airconditioner compressor has gone bad and needs to be replaced. you sould also check the tensioner pulley as the resister tab may have broken when the ac pulley seized up.
If it has seized up it will need overhauled or replaced.
Possibly a worn belt, seized/partially seized pulley (contacting serp. belt), worn belt tensioner or something melting to exhaust manifold.
A squeak squeak squeak noise is one of two thingsThe belt has a damaged portionEither the belt or one of the pulleys has oil or another contamination on it.If it is a dry grating wine it is a bad bearing in a pulley or driven accessory (alternator, water pump, AC pump etc)If it is a steady squeal the belt is slipping and is hard and glazed or the tensioner is seized and allowing it to run loose or one of the pulley things is seized.
Is it a flat Serpentine belt? It will have an automatic spring loaded tensioner, it could be seized and not maintaining proper tension, you should be able to get a tensioner arm assembly at a local autoparts store. If it is V belt then there should be just the upper and lower bolts in the alternators mounting brackets, one bracket (usually upper) will have a very long slot in it to alow for adjustment.
If it is leaking, cracked, or the piston is seized it needs replaced.
Not if the servo motor is seized. It will have to be replaced.
It's spring loaded, use a wrench or socket to move it. If it's really stuck it may be seized.
