Volkswagen Beetle cars need to have a 100,000 mile tune up done sometime after the car reaches the 90,000 mile mark. Replacing the timing belt is part of this service. Once the timing belt stops running, the vehicle will not operate and the belt will need to be replaced. It's a big job and somewhat costly. I had a Beetle and had the service done before the belt broke.

How do you set the timing on a 1989 VW Fox?

You can set it by ear by loosening the distributor hold down bolt and turning the distributor slowly back and forth with the car running until it sounds like it is running better. Or you can remove the 27mm hex plug on top of the transmission to reveal the timing marks and hook up an inductive timing light and set it that way.

Why does turning the distributor not adjust timing?

it does

How do you put a 1988 2.0 ford engine in time?

you need a timing light first of all. then with the engine running shoot the light at the spinning wheel behind fan. it will basically tell you to advance or retard your timing. you do that by turning your distributer.
