Alternator is probably going. Have it tested and replace it with the 130 amp alternator for a 96 Cobra. It fits fine. All you have to do is free up a few inches of wire by undoing the wire loom and pulling them out a little. The crappy one they use for the Mark VIII is a Mitsubishi putting out 120 amps. It was never designed to be re-built properly. Avoid the hassle and buy one from Ford. Do not waste money at a parts shop buying no-name alternators...warranty or not...if you have to change it every 2 years and get stranded somewhere, it's no deal.
Also, check your battery. It may be running low and should be fully charged before connecting it to a new alternator. Buy a new battery at the same time as the alternator if you think yours is weak. Batteries should put out about 12.3 - 12.5 when the cars not running and about 13.4 - 14 running.
(95 Mark VIII Owner) To help confirm; I have gone through several Parts Store alternators. In the process I have ALWAYS had charging problems. Even with new alternators and new batteries. Suck it up and buy the Ford OEM model. It WILL save you a multitude of headaches. And yes, I too have had to change it out every couple of years. And have been left stranded. Not only by the alternator, but also the Parts Store with the "Lifetime" warranty.
These are most likely related - when the vehicle detects certain emissions faults it will turn off the vehicle's traction control - not a safety issue. The service light is on due to an emissions control fault - need to have vehicle scanned to find the source of the error.

The TRAC light blinking on and off in a 1997 Lexus LS400 typically indicates that the traction control system is actively engaging or that there's an issue with the system. This could be due to wheel slip, a malfunction in the traction control sensors, or a related component like the ABS system. It's advisable to have the vehicle scanned for error codes to diagnose the specific problem accurately. If the light persists, consulting a professional mechanic is recommended to ensure safe operation.
The lamp is then scanned using a filter radiometer under computer control.

Scanned *can* be an adjective... if you are talking about a "scanned document" for instance. But if you say "She scanned the room for her friend," you are using it as a verb.
