This usually indicates that there's a problem with your alternator.
The car battery works in such a way that it keeps getting recharged as you drive. The alternator is the component that ensures the battery is sufficiently recharged. So the battery light comes on if it senses that the battery is not being charged sufficiently - this might be accompanied by a foreign sound under the hood if indeed the alternator belt is broken for instance.
You need to get the battery/alternator checked out at a mechanic or battery centre as soon as possible. If you continue driving the car, especially if you will be using headlights and other power-dependant functions, the power left in the battery is used up, with no recharging taking place, until it's completely dead. This might mean your car randomly switching off on you in the middle of the road as you are driving. Jump-starting won't help and the car will need to be towed. Best advice is to get it checked out immediately.
What kinda car is it... On Dodge Spirits there is no red light on the steering colum... what does the light look like/what does it say... that will help us figure out more about whats going on.
Sounds like the alternator is gone.
The battery light is to show when the alternater is not charging. A new battery wouldn't make any difference.
If you mean "Check Engine, SES" light, unplug the negative battery for about 1 minute. If if comes back on go to autozone, they'll plug in an OBD2 reader and tell you exactly whats causing it. Also if it stays on you wont pass emssions. (1996 & newer only.)
Check the alternator. 90% of the time that's it.
on the shifter push the button on the left side. If that does not work disconnect battery for a few minutes. On my kia when the hold button kept flashing and stayed on I discovered that my transmission fluid was low. Once i put the transmission fluid in the light went off.
if you meen NO LIGHT in the instrument pannel just check the battery, might be really dead
The battery light will come on when the engine fails, not part of the problem. Check out the ignition coil ballast resistor (if iftted). Its bypassed when cranking and in circuit when normal running
Are you sure the battery was dead? Have you checked it? You can check your battery and your alternator at AutoZone or Checker also I believe. If your battery is dead and you replace it, if the light is still on, it is the alternator. Take it off and check it, and if it is, replace it. I had to do the same thing. Make sure you return the old alternator to get some money back for the core. Also, make sure you connect all the cables on the alternator, because if you forget to connect the tiny cable (not the red one that charges the battery, but the other one that controls everything from the alternator) the battery won't be charged. Make sure you check everything first, hope this helps and good luck, it sounds worse then it is.
Medium-heavy duty battery.
