To remove the torque converter from a 1956 Ford-O-Matic transmission, first, ensure the vehicle is safely lifted and supported. Disconnect the transmission from the engine, then unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate. Carefully pull the torque converter straight out of the transmission, ensuring not to damage the input shaft or the pump. Finally, inspect the converter for any signs of wear or damage before installation.

The Torque Converter is part of the transmission, not part of the engine. The torque converter needs to come off with the transmission. You need to remove the starter to access the torque converter bolts/nuts and separate it from the flex plate. Besides loosing all of the fluid in the torque converter, you stand to damage converter seals and/or the pump if the converter isn't properly installed in the transmission.
The torque converter was not seated all the way into the transmission and the front pump got damaged in the process. The transmission front pump and torque converter will have to be replaced at the very least.
