Prop the tailgate all the way open. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry back the black clip-band at the attachment points; you don't have to pull the clip all the way off, just enough to be able to pull the strut off the ball. The new strut just pushes onto the ball, and clips in place. You do not have to pry the clip to attach the new strut.
